Patients with type 2 diabetes on long-term metformin medication have a significantly increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. This can cause neuropathies, among other things. In a placebo-controlled study, scientists were able to demonstrate the clinical benefit of high-dose oral vitamin B12 supplementation in diabetes patients taking metformin and suffering from neuropathies: Oral supplementation with 1000 μg of vitamin B12 per day for 12 months increased vitamin B12 levels and significantly improved nerve function and quality of life in the study participants.
